At dawn yesterday, Thursday 18 October, the Navy announced the interception of a boat with 60 people on board after leaving Nagua beach for Puerto Rico. The boat tried to evade the Navy at sea and the Air Force was called in for backup. The fragile 36-foot craft was dangerously overloaded, with 49 men, 10 women and a 14-year old. Coast Guard Bellatrix (GC 106) and Polaris LI-162 interceptor launches detained the boat off Cabo Cabron in Samana. The passengers were taken to the Navy station in Las Terrenas, Samana and were sent to the M2 Intelligence Division of the Navy to investigate the organizers of the trip. The Navy has been actively stopping boat trips, with many successes in recent weeks.
