The winners of the 24th Leon Art Contest

The Centro Leon has announced the winners of the 24th prestigious Eduardo Leon Jimenes Art Contest. Winners of three equal awards are:

Hulda Guzman (1984) for Fiesta en el Batey, for the way she captures the traditional landscape, portraits and references to the history of art, in a Dominican context.

Carlos de Leon (1988) for Te Amo, for the way in which he converted a personal experience in an object full of meaning, as of gender violence to question this phenomenon in contemporary Dominican society.

Raquel Paiewonsky (1969), Interlude. This is a performance that was awarded for notable development in the creation of the performance that has resulted in a sober and austere work that involves and empowers participants in the action by way of her own body and the stories she tells through her clothes.

The Centro Leon also awarded three special prizes for artists on behalf of entities that are allies of the Contest. These are:

Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Collection Award: Yoel Bordas (1980), for his way of building narratives upon realities in different contexts, questioning the economic, socio-political and environmental system where the characters appear to have been rescued from a post-apocalyptic world.

French Award to Young Talent granted by the Embassy of France: Francisco (Pancho) Rodriguez (1979) for his commitment to investigating Dominican-Haitian relations and the conflicts at the social and human level.

City of Cadiz Award, granted by the City Government of Cadiz: Sayuri Guzman (1976) for the process achieved as from autobiographic elements to create a memory stick and generate a space of transit between the private and public spheres.

The awards were decided by a jury made up of Maria Elena Ditren, Ivo Mesquita and Maria Ines Rodriguez in Santiago de los Caballeros.
