On Friday night, 19 October, Robinson Diaz hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to give the Gigantes del Cibao a 4-3 victory over their hosts in Santo Domingo, the Leones del Escogido. In the Estadio Cibao in Santiago, the Aguilas Cibaenas, starring Barolo Colon, defeated the Estrellas Orientales. Homeruns by Oscar Taveras and Francisco Pena led the way to the 7-3 victory. In La Romana, the Tigres del Licey pounded the Toros del Este 12-5, led by Mike Olt’s three hits in four at-bats, including a round tripper. Four errors by the Toros did not help their cause.
On Saturday, a homerun by Escogido’s Pedro Feliz gave the Leones a 6-4 victory over the Aguilas. The Estrellas Orientales, helped by a homerun by Todd Linden, defeated the Tigres del Licey in San Pedro de Macoris. And over in San Francisco de Macoris, in the Julian Javier Stadium, the Toros del Este, also used the homerun (by Willie Otanez) to defeat the hometown Gigantes 7-5
On Sunday, the Leones del Escogido, led by good pitching by Daniel Cabrera and good hitting by Roger Kieschnick, defeated the Toros del Este, 3-1. In the jam-packed Estadio Cibao, in Santiago, the Tigres del Licey and the Aguilas Cibaenas renewed their fiercest rivalry. This time the Tigres came out on top, 3-2, in a game that was not for the faint-hearted. They meet again on Tuesday in Santo Domingo. Lifetime, the series between the two teams is 436 for the Aguilas against 431 for Licey. In San Pedro de Macoris, the Gigantes del Cibao exploded for 12 runs and defeated the hometown Estrellas 12-5.
