The Ministry for Women is asking the Senate and Chamber of Deputies to not take what she described as “retrograde steps in progress made for women” when modifying the Penal Code.
Minister of Women Alejandrina German urged lawmakers to take into account the Dominican Constitution, international agreements, Law 24-97, the National Development Strategy 2030 and the National Gender Equality Plan 2007-2017 and to take the violence suffered by Dominican women into consideration.
She said that they were concerned to see that there might be a return to the proposal originally submitted in 2001 that only considered domestic violence and not violence against women as has been established by national and international agreements. She said that violence against women is a violation of their fundamental rights, affecting families, making a negative impact on society and reaching alarming levels.
