Pension plan debacle continues

Fulgencio Severino, president of the National Patriotic Movement For All (MPT) and specialist in social security has said that the decree issued by President Danilo Medina abolishing State support in complementary pension plans violates the law and shows a lack of understanding of how these pension plans work.

He said that it was not the people who worked in the institutions who enjoyed the privileges of the plans, nor the pension funds themselves, but that the problem was the corrupt politicians who were appointed, who gave themselves outrageous salaries and who approved plans to give themselves outrageous pensions with contribution periods that violated laws 379-81 and 87-01.

He said that the corrupt officials who were managing the institutions and the pension funds themselves had counted on the indifference of the government and the pensions superintendent, who knew what was happening and did nothing about it.

He said that the Pensions Superintendence is responsible for keeping an eye on the plans and should know the rules and check if they are being operated within the law.
