Judges relinquish pensions – for now

Four former Central Electoral Board (JCE) judges are requesting the suspension of their pensions while they occupy government positions. They are Julio Cesar Castanos Guzman, who was appointed to the Supreme Court of Justice, Mariano Rodriguez, president of the Supreme Electoral Court, justice Carmen Leyda Pina, judge at the Constitutional Court, and Roberto Rodriguez, legal advisor to the DGII.

JCE president Roberto Rosario said the request has been approved.

Recently, the fact that many serving government officials collect hefty pensions while holding other highly paid government jobs has been featured in the press. Institutions that are under the spotlight for their enormous pensions include the Central Bank, the Department of Customs, Department of Stocks, National Housing Bank (BNV), the Banco de Reservas, the Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE), the Monetary Board, and the Superintendence of Banks.

The law establishes that it is illegal for a person to collect a government pension and continue as a government employee.
