The long-time chief of Bienes Nacionales, the government entity in charge of government property, has resigned, enraged at the publication of governmental Chamber of Accounts audits that show irregularities during his administration.
Elias Wessin Chavez said he would dedicate himself to proving that the allegations were false. The irregular use of funds at the government department has been published in the online newspaper acento.com.do
As reported in the media, the audit revealed that the entity paid more than RD$160 million in payroll to employees and officials who do not provide any service to the state, nepotism, influence trafficking and wasteful spending, among other irregularities.
Wessin Chavez and his PQD minority political party were allied with former President Leonel Fernandez for the 2004 and 2008 election. He also appears in numerous photographs with current President Danilo Medina and Vice President Margarita Cedeno.
