Mayor Serulle loses in court

Last night, Wednesday 24 October, the mayor of Santiago, Gilberto Serulle, was convicted of defamation and slander against his predecessor as mayor, Jose Enrique Sued, and ordered to pay him damages of 1.5 million pesos.

Serulle had accused Sued of having expropriated more than RD$40 million from the town hall when he was mayor, but according to the former mayor’s defense team he was not been able to prove it in court and was convicted.

Serulle says he will lodge an appeal at the Supreme Court.

Serulle and Sued’s followers had to be restrained at the hearing, where Serulle was order to pay half of his monthly salary to Sued.
