Bauta oversees release of baby turtles

Minister of the Environment Bautista Rojas Gomez recently headed the ceremonial release of 50 baby turtles from the hundreds of eggs laid by the Carey turtle known as Guiby last August. According to El Caribe, more than a hundred of the baby turtles will finish hatching and go into the waters of the Caribbean at night. Each year the turtle returns to the Guibia Beach on the Santo Domingo Malecon to deposit her eggs. The turtle is approximately 70 years old, and the Ministry has posted guards on permanent duty to protect her nest and that of another Carey turtle that followed Guiby to the nesting site on the shores of the highly populated area. Thanks in part to the work of the Ministry, this year turtles were able to lay eggs at Del Valle, Limon and Coson beaches in Samana where fifteen nests of Tinglar turtles – another highly endangered species – were located and protected.
