Congressional Commission begins hearings on taxes

This morning, Monday 29 October at 10am the special Congressional joint commission will receive explanations from government economists and details on the “bill for the strengthening of the state collection capacity for fiscal sustainability and sustainable development” or the taxation increase proposal that President Danilo Medina submitted to Congress on Wednesday, 24 October.

Minister of Economy Temistocles Montas is heading the group of officials at the meeting at the Senate.

At 4pm, a commission chaired by Senate president Reinaldo Pared Perez, and the head of the Chamber of Deputies, Abel Martinez, will meet with executives from the Cerveceria Nacional Dominicana, the Presidente beer brewery, in order to hear their opinions on the tax reform.

On Tuesday, 30 October at 10am, executives from the industrial free zones are scheduled to lobby for their sector, and at 4pm representatives of the National Business Council (Conep) will be there, as reported in Diario Libre.

The taxation bill has been criticized for being one of a continuous series of tax increases (six during the eight years of the Leonel Fernandez administration) that have only succeeded in feeding wasteful government spending and not national development.
