Osiris de Leon and the bridge at Los Pilones

Geologist Osiris de Leon has told reporters from Hoy newspaper that the foundations of the bridge at Los Pilones should be rebuilt with breakwaters of large rocks instead of gabions and soil that is susceptible to erosion. He said that a permanent solution to the problems at this site would be to build a bigger and much higher bridge that would allow the largest of floods to pass unimpeded below the structure. He acknowledged that this solution was much more expensive and that the government did not have the resources to implement such a project out at this time. As a temporary alternative, he suggested extending the eastern approaches of the bridge by extending the concrete structures, which might provide a short-term solution. He added that the Ocoa River on the route between Bani and Azua has destroyed the approaches to the Los Pilones bridge twice in two months, and this cuts off the entire south of the country.
