Cyrille Aimee to perform in DR

Known for her strong musicianship and rhythmically driven style, Cyrille Aimee, the French-Dominican singer who won the Sarah Vaughan Jazz Vocal Competition on 21 October, will be in Santo Domingo for several performances with her Surreal Band this December.

See this spirited performer in Santo Domingo on 18 December when she will appear in a Benefit Gala at the Dominican Fiesta Hotel. Cyrille was born in France to a French father and Dominican mother. She is regarded worldwide as a rising star in jazz and is best known for her originality and different vocal styles. She is a graduate of the University of Purchase in New York, a winner of the 2010 Thelonius Monk jazz contest, and in 2007 the Montreux Jazz Festival Competition. She is a New York resident and regularly appears in Manhattan clubs such as Smalls Jazz Club, Birdland or Dizzy’s Club.

The Surreal band brings together fellow students at the State University of New York at Purchase. These include Assaf Gleizner (Israel) piano, Matt Simmons (USA) saxophone, Rajiv Jayaweera (Australia) drums, Sam Annin (Australia) bass, and Wayne Tucker (USA) trumpet.

New Jersey’s NJ portal said she won among 900 singers with her swinging rendition of “I’m Beginning to See the Light,” her bubbly take on “Sometimes I’m Happy” and a magnetic version of the ballad “I’m Through With Love.”

Judges for the final round were celebrated jazz vocalists Dee Dee Bridgewater, Jon Hendricks and Melissa Walker as well as journalist and WBGO host Michael Bourne and musician and producer Larry Rosen. The Mike Renzi Trio accompanied the singers.
