More money for education

Victor Sanchez Jaquez, Deputy Minister for Education and Director of the National Office of Planning and Development for the Ministry of Education (MINERD), and Maria Cristiana Acosta Sosa, Director of Organizational Development, say that the Ministry has increased the amount of operating expenditure per student from RD$550 this year to RD$2,300 for 2013. This represents an overall increase from RD$1.04 billion in 2012 to almost RD$4.29 billion for the coming year.

They said that this level is specified in the General Law of Education, but had never been applied. The will cover hiring of more teachers, wage and incentive increases, school supplies, construction and repairs.

Sanchez Jaquez said that MINERD had started a decentralization process that meant that each school would be self-managing, and that the districts, regions and central bodies would be there as a support network.

He said that 50% of the resources had been transferred so far, and the idea was that 85% would eventually go to the schools themselves, 10% to the Education Districts and 5% to the Regional Offices. The amount each school would receive would depend on student numbers.
