David Ortiz joins fiscal reform protest

Baseball player David Ortiz wore protest garb to also protest the new bill, as published in El Caribe.

National Police chief Major General Jose Armando Polanco Gomez says that he has cancelled all police leave from Monday night, 5 November in preparation for the Protest Day that has been called for today, Tuesday 6 November and that his agents will be patrolling to try and prevent problems.

The protest against the tax reform has been organized by the Organization For All in the Fight, together with the Alternative Social Forum, the CNTU and JUNTAPO.

The police chief said he hoped that the strike would be professional and civil and that there will be no problems.

He said that the Constitution allows people to express their feelings if they do not agree with something the government does, but they have to do it in an orderly fashion.

He emphasized that before the strike begins security in some areas will be strengthened in order to prevent disorder while denying that certain elements wanted to provoke riots and clashes with the authorities.

He maintained that there should be no problems for people who wanted to go to work and get on with their normal daily routine, saying that the country needed everyone to work.

The Alternative Social Forum, Fiscal Justice and the CNTU all plan to take part in the national protest day today, and that there would be a march in the capital starting at 10am and a mass celebrated by several priests as part of the day.

Meanwhile, another transport union leader, Fenatrado president Blas Peralta said he had not called for his members to join the protest today in respect for the traditional truce during the first 100 days of a new government. Fenatrado is a main beneficiary of the tax reform bill that includes new taxpayer money to pay for changes in the transport fleet of government- affiliated organizations.
