On Saturday, 3 November, the police arrested fugitive Diomedes Moya Duran (a.k.a. Oreja or ears) who has been on the run after being sentenced to ten years in jail for belonging to a gang of murderers led by Puerto Rican drug capo Jose David Figueroa Agosto, himself responsible for several deaths.
Moya Duran was convicted along with another seven people implicated in the murders of Colonel Jose Amado Gonzalez, businessman Ruben Soto Hayet and Omar Antigua Polanco.
He was caught in the Los Praditos sector of Santo Domingo, where he was in hiding.
Oreja was originally charged and released but this was appealed by the Public Prosecution service and he was subsequently sentenced to jail.
The others involved are Jose Miguel Rodriguez Almonte (John), Jose Anibal Hidalgo Garcia, and Winton Rodriguez Taveras (El Fire or el Cangri) who were sentenced to 30 years in jail, Gian Enrique Rojas Matos (Yan), who received a 20-year sentence and Ricardo Perez Mateo (Maceta), who was sentenced to 15 years. Juan Amauris Rodriguez Minier (Ambiorix), Yermi Mercedes Liranzo Cruz (La Diosa), Jose Alberto de la Cruz and Joel Antonio Feliz Medina were also part of the group.
Wilgen Ortiz de los Santos had been released but has since also been sentenced to ten years in jail.
The group members are also accused of murdering Jorge Vasquez Santana and Maximo Jeronimo Paredes, the watchman and messenger at the French bakery, of wounding Madeline Bernard Pena, wife of Colonel Gonzalez Gonzalez, and of wounding Agustin Romero.
