Tax Reform bill in the Chamber of Deputies

The Tax Reform Bill has now been sent to the Chamber of Deputies for consideration today, Tuesday 6 November. Deputies are deeply divided about the bill, with the 79 members from the PRD and their allies warning they will vote against it.

Ramon Rogelio Genao from the PRSC, a close PLD ally, pointed out that in order to be passed the bill only needs to be approved by a simple majority, in other words 50% plus one. This would mean the PLD legislators have enough votes to pass the bill as received from the Senate.

Hundreds of people are protesting against the bill outside Congress today, Tuesday 6 November.
