Speaking at the first national seminar on trans-border migration and Dominican-Haitian relations, the executive director of the Center for Dominican-Haitian Studies, Luis Vargas said that the trade balance between the Dominican Republic and Haiti is overwhelmingly unequal with the Dominican Republic selling much more to Haiti than vice versa.
He said that the Dominican Republic sold almost US$1.1 billion in goods to Haiti each year while importing less than US$50 million, and that a commercial relationship could not be maintained in this way. He concluded by calling on Dominican companies to import more merchandise from Haiti.
