Foreign Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso was in Port-au-Prince yesterday, Thursday 8 November for work sessions to reach agreements on migration, security, investment, bilateral trade and joint cooperation for development. After the meeting Prime Minister of Haiti Laurent Lamothe and Morales said that there was a need to consolidate advances on sensitive issues. The ministers said discussions on border markets and their need for regulation would continue today, Friday 9 November during a work session in Jimani, on the Dominican side of the border. Customs officers and other authorities that deal with cross-border trade will take part.
Lamothe and Morales said they agreed to encourage permanent communication between police authorities of both countries to fight crime.
They also announced forthcoming meetings with those responsible for promoting trade and investment to make the most of the insular trade. They held specific discussions on the impasses in the trade in poultry and salami.
In Port-au-Prince, the meeting took place at the residence of Prime Minister Lamothe. Foreign Minister Pierre Richard Casimir and Haitian ambassador in the DR Fritz Cineas were also present.
“We propose to prepare a work schedule for 2013 and on that agenda migration is one of the main issues.” He said that there was still much work to be done, and good intentions for both countries to emerge as winners.
Morales Troncoso was accompanied by Dominican ambassador in Haiti Ruben Silie and deputy Foreign Relations minister Cesar Dargam.
He also announced that President Danilo Medina would meet with President Michel Martely in Cadiz, Spain during the Ibero-American Summit.
Haitian Prime Minister Lamothe said that his country was open to Dominican investments and trade but that it was important to settle the sensitive issues.
