Major Police shakeup: dozens discharged

Depending on which newspaper you read (Hoy says 47 and other newspapers say 62) there was a major shakeup in the National Police over the weekend of 10-11 November. The Higher Police Council discharged dozens of members, including a colonel and two majors, and applied penalties to another 15 officers for alleged criminal or disciplinary offenses. The charges range from complicity with drug trafficking to the involvement in the death of a schoolteacher in the demonstrations in Barahona, and a student from the UASD in Santo Domingo, negligence in the death of a deputy prosecutor during a search and the murder of an inmate in San Francisco de Macoris. Police Chief Jose Armando Polanco Gomez said that the list of agents “kicked out” of the force includes a colonel, two lieutenant colonels, three majors, nine captains, eight first lieutenants, 16 second lieutenants, two sergeants major, two sergeants, two corporals and a private.
