The discovery of large amounts of gold and copper in the mountains north of San Juan de la Maguana in the southwest has intensified efforts to confirm the amounts of the precious metals. The deposits, according to test drillings are at 500 meters below the surface. Hoy newspaper reports that the 3,000-hectare concession called Las Tres Palmas is located some 20 kilometers from El Ingenito and is only accessible via a dirt track.
Worried about the possibility of an open cast mining operation, Bishop Jose Dolores Grullon Estrella visited the site and talked to the engineer in charge of the project, Julio Espaillat. Espaillat, the manager for GoldQuest, showed the bishop the operation and assured him that all mining – if the deposits are large enough – would be done underground. “Ah, good, as long as it does not affect the forests and the rivers,” said Bishop Grullon. In order for the mine to become reality, the company needs to confirm the presence of at least 1,500,000 ounces of gold and 30 million ounces of copper.
