No need to panic about exchange rate

The governor of the Central Bank, Hector Valdez Albizu, has said that the reason the dollar-peso exchange rate has risen over the last few days, from RD$39.59 to RD$39.89, is simply due to the time of year.

He said that this always happens during the Christmas period as people are spending large amounts of dollars on stock, not only food but also clothes, household items and other things and said that neither the Central Bank authorities nor the government are at all concerned about the increase.

He said that a 2.7% increase was no reason for panic and that as the tourist season was starting and many overseas-based Dominicans were returning home, or sending more money to relatives, it was normal to see this change and that once Christmas was over the exchange rate would stabilize once more.
