Police respond to public outcry

The chief of the National Police has relieved two Generals of their position and made other high-level changes amidst the outcry caused by the last round of deaths in which police agents were involved.

The commander of the northeast region, based in San Francisco de Macoris, General Juan Ramon de la Cruz Martinez, has been relieved of his post and not reassigned. In his place is General Orison Olivence Minaya and his deputy, Brigade General Victor Campusano.

He was removed from his post hours after investigative journalist Nuria Pena showed images of a police officer executing an escaped prisoner by shooting him in the head after he had been detained.

In addition General Olivence Minaya, who was commander of the northwest region, based in Mao, Valverde, has been replaced by General Juan Pilarte Feliz.

In another attempt to tackle the current situation, starting today, Tuesday 13 November the National Police has set up several commissions, composed of three Major Generals and 13 Generals who will accompany colonels throughout the country to tell the police how they should behave when dealing with rallies demonstrating against social or other issues.

They will train the police how to avoid violating the human rights of demonstrators and to refrain from using inappropriate force.

The commissions will be chaired by Major Generals Rolando Rosado Mateo, Jose Fernandez Fadul and Henry Peralta Jimenez, each beginning by visiting La Romana, Higuey, Barahona, Pedernales, Neyba, Jimani and San Francisco de Macoris.

The Generals involved are Mientras Frener Bello Arias, Ramon Francisco Rodriguez Sanchez, Ramon E. Ciriaco Nunez, Juana Campusano Jimenez, Nelson Rosario, Leonte Alburquerque Sasso, Ramon Alcantara, Mario E. Objio Morales, Alberto Bienvenido Olivo, Maximo Baez Aybar, Bernardo Santiago Santiago, Boris Goico Campagna, Nelson Peguero Paredes and Cesar Sena Rojas.
