Drivers beware: marbetes must be renewed

Only 16 days are left to renew the license stickers (marbetes) for all vehicles in the Dominican Republic. The process, totally painless, can be done over the Internet (dgii.gob.do), at Savings and Loan bank offices, at all of the branches of ADEMI, at all of the branches of the Banco de Reservas and many other banks. All that is needed is a photocopy of the vehicles’ registration and a photocopy of the owners’ cedula and money, of course.

For cars over five years old the tax is RD$1,200 and for newer vehicles the tax is RD$2,400. If you do not have your “marbete” (sticker) after 30 November, AMET is authorized to seize your vehicle and you will have to pay towing, storage and a RD$600 late fee. Note: the Internet option closes on 27 November, according to El Nuevo Diario. So far the DGII has collected over RD$629 million, some RD$155 million more than last year.
