European money for education

According to the General Department of Multilateral Cooperation (Digecoom), an agreement has been signed by the national European Development Funds coordinator Antonio Vargas Hernandez and the European Union (EU) representative in the country, Irene Horejs, which states that the EU has set aside EUR45.5 million (US$57.3 million) to back quality education in the Dominican Republic.

The support will help improve the education indicators in the country and is part of the Budget Support Program for the Education Sector (Papse) begun in 2006. The funds will be used to prepare and implement the Ministry of Education Ministry strategic plan for the management of education.

Vargas Hernandez stressed that with the EU’s help they would be able to develop a quality national education system based on continual learning, human development and collective responsibility.

Horejs emphasized the importance of this funding support, saying that education was one of the fundamental areas for the development of the population and she said that this second phase of support marked a historic moment for education in the Dominican Republic.

Vargas Hernandez also reiterated the EU’s commitment towards contributing to improve the country’s progress, wellbeing and development whilst eliminating poverty and ensuring sustainable development for all.
