“Stop the circus,” says Dominguez Brito

The Attorney General, Francisco Dominguez Brito, has described the complaint filed by the president of the Alianza Pais party, Guillermo Moreno, against former President Leonel Fernandez, “a politically partisan and short-term document.”

“Based on this document, we are not going to work on the fight against corruption. The fight against corruption is going to be based on objective and concrete elements that strive for no impunity in the Dominican Republic,” he said.

When he was asked whether there was no proof of fraud in the document, Dominguez Brito replied that “this is a position that Moreno has maintained, we are carrying out an investigative process in all of the cases with which they have presented us, whether it is with the reports from the Chamber of Accounts, of which we have several, and a series of reports that we have, but all this is being done according to procedure.”

He said that the way the complaint was presented undermined the fight against corruption and “we are not going to pay attention to what are very personal interests of current events, antagonisms or perhaps opportunities, those that define the activity of the Justice Department.”

Referring to the case of Senator Amable Aristy Castro, he said that there are “serious” implications in the Chamber of Accounts report about irregularities where the penal laws were violated, and he said they had acted. “The cases have to be viewed with objectivity; I do not want the justice system to become a circus and we are working based on parameters which are not the ones that in my opinion should predominate in the Justice Department,” he stated.

He said that his activities are strictly in accordance with the country’s judicial standards. “We were the ones who asked for the withdrawal of the definitive filing of the case of Senator Felix Bautista,” he recalled.
