The Ministry for Public Works has announced that the toll for the Coral Highway will be RD$300 for the return journey, 70 kilometers each way, and that construction company Odebrecht is expected to complete the tollbooths by the end of November.
The first tollbooth, charging RD$50, will be at Kilometer 18 between La Romana and Bavaro and the second will be at Kilometer 58 and will cost RD$100.
In a press release, the Public Works Minister Gonzalo Castillo said that the original plan was for the toll to be around RD$400 to RD$500 but that after making some financial calculations and taking into consideration who will be using the road they decided that the government should charge a fairer rate.
He went on to say that the money raised from the tolls would be used to keep the road in good condition, maintain a police patrol presence and eventually to have an emergency ambulance service in case of accidents.
