The National Police, working with the Justice Department and the National Drug Control Agency (DNCD), has dismantled a powerful network of criminals with international scope. They seized 337 cell phones, mostly BlackBerry and iPhone smart phones that had been stolen in different parts of the country. The authorities also seized a list of the IMEIS (cell phone blocking codes) for 480 devices of the same brands.
The network would buy stolen BlackBerry phones for RD$1,200 to RD$1,500 and sell them in Colombia for between US$225 and US$350. Most of the cell phones are listed on the register of stolen phones registered at the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Indotel). A Colombian and two Dominicans were arrested.
