Speaking at the Presidential Palace ahead of a meeting with President Danilo Medina yesterday Wednesday 21 November, the Minister of Interior and Police, Ramon Monchy Fadul announced that the numbers of police officers on patrol will be doubled throughout the country, starting on December 10, in order to prevent potential thefts once people received their double salaries.
He emphasized that the police could not celebrate Christmas as their job was to protect the country’s citizens.
Commenting on the 602 protests that took place during the first 90 days of Medina’s government, Fadul said that they have all been peaceful and that the police have acted with caution, apart from isolated cases like the medical student who was shot dead by police during a protest against the Tax Reform at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD).
He accused Hipolito Mejia of being behind the protests and not respecting the standard 100 days of grace which new governments were usually given, as he only wanted to persecute former President Leonel Fernandez.
