Because police officers were asking for money in order to deliver an arrest warrant, Mariana Arisleyda Santiago Reyes could not stop the abuse by her former partner and ended up stabbing him to death. According to her story, as told in El Caribe, Mariana went to the police station in Camboya, a barrio of Santiago, several times in order to have her abuser served with the warrant that was issued on 24 May 2012, but the police always asked her for RD$500 “for gasoline,” money that she was not willing or able to pay. She told reporters that she was not sorry for what she had done because it was her life that was in danger.
