Santiago has a water deficit

According to the Santiago Water and Sewer Corporation (CORAASAN), there is a deficit of 13 million gallons a day in the city’s water supply. Operations and maintenance manager Hector Jaquez disclosed this information during the International Engineering and Architecture Congress held at the Business Building on Las Carreras over the weekend of 24-25 November. The deficit used to reach 44 million gallons a day, but a program to reduce leaks and the repairs at the water gates at La Noriega have reduced it by over 60%. He said that the corporation serves over 900,000 users, with an installed capacity of 156 million gallons a day, more than enough to take care of the demand of 134 million gallons. However, leaks and wastage present major obstacles to fulfilling local demands. Engineer Jaquez added that US$29 million in funding from Denmark would be used to extend the water service to the Cienfuegos barrio and another loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) for US$25 million will be used to improve the distribution networks in the city.
