Call for Amable Aristy to be jailed

According to a source at the Attorney General’s office, the Attorney General, Francisco Dominguez Brito, has asked Dr. Mariano German Mejia, president of the Supreme Court of Justice to remand the Senator for La Altagracia, Amable Aristy Castro, in jail for alleged acts of corruption when he was Secretary General of the Dominican Municipal League (LMD).

In order for this to happen, German Mejia will have to assign a high court judge to the case as Aristy Castro has judicial immunity due to the fact he is a Senator. ?The request has come as a result of Dominguez Brito deciding to reopen an investigation by the National Director of Persecution of Administrative Corruption (DPCA), Hotoniel Bonilla Garcia into Aristy Castro in August last year.

It is claimed that during his term in office at the LMD, RD$159 million was spent ‘helping’ people and buying food and another RD$32 million to people who didn’t even belong to the institution. Johnny Jones, the current Secretary of LMD confirmed that RD$250 million had disappeared from the pension fund in 2010.

Aristy Castro denies the charges, saying that he was the only Secretary of the League who left money there, some RD$65 million.
