More people may be charged in the Quirino case

Diario Libre quotes an unnamed source as saying that a Grand Jury in the United States that heard the case about the Dominican former army Captain, Quirino Ernesto Paulino Castillo (El Don) plans to meet again in the next few weeks to examine charges against a new group of suspects and to decide whether to proceed with charges for international drug trafficking, conspiracy and money laundering.

The source said that the group includes former high-ranking military figures, businesspeople and politicians who could be requested for extradition to the US from the Dominican Republic if it is felt there is probable cause.

Quirino appeared in the same court 39 times and is now in the Corrections Center in Brooklyn, but everything has been done in total secrecy and all the documents are sealed.

He was extradited from the DR in 2005, accused along with 20 other suspects and negotiated with the prosecutors, supposedly revealing a list of 37 people linked to his organization and other drug trafficking gangs in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Colombia and other Central and South American countries.

Of the original 21, only three, including Quirino are still in jail without having been sentenced which leads to the belief that they are still in negotiations with the prosecutors.
