Speaking at a commemorative event for World AIDS day, headed by Vice President Margarita Cedeno, at the Presidential Palace, Dr. Victor Terrero, director of the National AIDS and HIV Council (CONAVIHSIDA), proposed a national crusade to prevent more children being born with the virus.
He said that it was embarrassing and shameful that in the 21st century children were being born with HIV and that it was an unacceptable situation. He urged medical professional groups like the Dominican Medical Association (CMD) and the Gynecology, Obstetrics, Pediatric and Infectious Diseases associations as well as society as a whole, to unite in a national campaign to ensure that women give birth to children free of HIV.
At the same time, the government provided RD$79 million to buy anti retroviral medication and RD$55 million for HIV testing, which Terrero said would help to fill the gap left by the World AIDS fund.
