Violence victim travels to Miami to try to save one eye

28-year old engineer Francina Hungria, who was shot in the face by an armed robber, is receiving financial assistance from San Juan de la Maguana senator Felix Bautista. The controversial senator is covering the cost of taking her to Miami, Florida where specialists at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami will try to save the sight in her remaining eye. The center is regarded as the leader in the specialty in the United States. Hungria lost her right eye when her attacker opened the unlocked driver’s door of her vehicle as he tried to flee after being caught in a robbery in Santo Domingo’s Piantini neighborhood. He shot at her in an attempt to force her to get out of the driver’s seat.

She traveled to Miami in an air ambulance and will be treated by Dominican specialist Salomon Melgen who will try to save her left eye. Bautista told El Dia newspaper that the costs are being covered by the Ministry of Public Health, the First Lady’s Office and his own Integrated Development Foundation. Bautista said he himself would accompany the family to Miami until Hungria’s condition improves. As reported, the Ministry of Public Health picked up 90% of the tab of her costs at the Abel Gonzalez Medical Center, and Bautista’s foundation covered the remaining 10%.

Meanwhile, yesterday, Thursday 29 November Rigoberto Rosario, lawyer of the Dominican Association Against Corruption (Adocco) called for the Supreme Court of Justice to declare senator Felix Bautista in contempt and to order his arrest. His lawyer Abel Rodriguez del Orbe asked the judge to dismiss Adocco’s objections. Judge Castellanos has postponed the case until Thursday, 6 December. Bautista is being questioned for overvaluation of public works and other allegations and did not attend the court hearing on the accusations.
