Vargas suggests national pact against crime

The president of the main opposition PRD party, Miguel Vargas Maldonado, is advising President Danilo Medina to unite society in a national pact to deal efficiently and stoutly with crime and violence that is covering the country. According to a statement sent to Diario Libre yesterday, Sunday 2 December, Vargas said that the police reform that the government is currently considering is an excellent opportunity for drawing up a pact between the authorities and society which takes into account prevention and control of violence and crime, but includes other factors. Regarding the Penal Code, Vargas suggested that they should reach agreements that are necessary so that getting past extreme positions, this legal instrument will be an effective guarantee and a balance between rights and duties of the citizens. It should have as its objective the preservation of everyone’s lives and possessions.
