A naturalized United States citizen whose DNA test found he was not the biological father of one of his daughters, has chained himself and his two children to the fence across the street from the US Consulate in Santo Domingo. Dominican-born Miguel Familia is suing the Consulate and the clinic that did the test for US$100 million for allegedly refusing his daughter a residence visa because of an incorrect DNA test result. Familia said that the Testing and Research Clinic in the US had cost him his marriage and destroyed his family. His lawyer, Carlos de la Rosa, said yesterday, Tuesday 4 December that a visit to the laboratory in the United States showed that it was not up to the standards required to operate. After years of appeals, the family was re-tested in two different laboratories – at the insistence of the wife – and both test results showed that Familia was, indeed, the father of the young girl, now 11.
