The president of the Senate and general secretary of the ruling PLD party, Reinaldo Pared Perez, says that his party backs and supports a proposal by PRD party president Miguel Vargas Maldonado, who suggested signing a pact for citizen safety.
Pared said that the PLD backs the proposal to unite with society in a national pact to face the crime and violence that is engulfing the country in a forceful and efficient manner in order to reduce the levels of violence and crime that is currently being registered in the Dominican Republic.
“And since I make this announcement in the name of the PLD, to back engineer Miguel Vargas Maldonado’s proposal, I think the occasion is propitious enough to invite the government, comrade Danilo Medina, to explore the possibility of accepting this proposal because I believe that it offers a golden opportunity for the government itself since they have already announced a police reform and are hurrying to take measures to curb crime,” he said.
In a page 2 editorial comment today, Wednesday 5 December, Diario Libre reads between the lines of Pared Perez’s statement that the PLD administration will back Vargas Maldonado’s proposal as a way of further weakening his fellow party member and opposition leader Hipolito Mejia’s anti-Leonel and anti-corruption stance. Vargas Maldonado has been a traditional ally with the PLD administrations. His support made it possible for the Constitution to be changed in 2010 to allow for former Presidents to run for office again.
