Rains cause havoc in Cibao and Northwest Line

Several areas in the Central Cibao and the northwest were nearly cut off by roads collapsing and landslides after heavy rains over the last few days. The National Meteorological Office (Onamet) reported that a low-pressure trough over the north coast would continue to cause showers and thunderstorms in the north, northwest, northeast, southeast and the Central Mountains. There were several collapses on the Luperon Tourist Highway between Santiago and Puerto Plata, blocking access at several points. The Ministry of Public Works responded by sending heavy equipment to clear the way.

The national deputy director of Civil Defense, Francisco Arias, called on drivers to travel with caution along the highway in order to prevent accidents. The heavy rains also caused the collapse of a section of the highway that connects El Pino with Loma de Cabrera in Dajabon, where 12 communities are cut off. The affected sectors include El Aguacate, Manuel Bueno, La Jagua, La Ceibita, El Cadillar, La Penita, and Las Lagunas in the border region.

In the Ensanche Espaillat in Santiago, more than 40 houses were flooded and the streets are still underwater affecting the movement of people and vehicles. The president of the neighborhood council of the Omar Garcia sector said that the flooding was more serious than in other barrios because of the poor condition of the storm drains.
