New school construction to start

The government is planning to begin the construction of 10,000 classrooms at a cost of RD$14.7 billion as set out in Decree 625-12, issued by President Danilo Medina as part of the National School Building Program.

The work will begin as soon as the government hands over the 20% deposit to the engineers who will be carrying out the building.

The plan is for the 372 schools being built in the first stage of the program to be ready for the 2013-2014 school year, benefitting 190,000 children.

Most of the land where the schools are to be built belongs to the State, although some is privately owned and Yokasta Guzman, Director General of Public Contracts said that those carrying out the building work must do so with transparency.
