During the visit, the chief of the Police criticized the government saying that it was allowing criminal actions to be legalized. He mentioned as an example the authorization of the import of different brands of motorcycle and vehicle chassis.
Police Chief Jose Armando Polanco Gomez said that in 2012 more than 2,000 of the chassis were imported, and are regularly used to reassemble stolen cars, pick ups, SUVs and motorcycles. He said that although the chassis are legally imported they were one way in which the government facilitates vehicle theft in the country. “We are legalizing criminal acts,” said Polanco during a meeting with members of the Chamber of Deputies Interior and Police Commission. He visited at the request of the legislators who had expressed concern about escalating violent acts and abuses by the Police. Ironically, during the event, several legislators favored the Police illegally implementing the death penalty and eliminating criminals.
“We have fallen into excess. If we do not create the necessary elements, perhaps in 10 years we will be among the 50 most violent cities in the world,” warned Polanco.
He announced that in order to increase preventive actions, some 4,000 new agents would be recruited for 2013.
