In what news commentators say is an open invitation to break the laws by the people in charge of making them, deputies meeting with the chief of the Police yesterday called for beating crime by killing off criminals. The Dominican Republic does not have the death penalty.
As reported in El Dia, yesterday, Thursday 6 December several deputies called on the chief of the Police to wield an iron fist and shoot known criminals and when they decide to eliminate these individuals they should never let themselves be captured on video or allow the media to cover it. El Dia says that Luisin Jimenez (BIS), Francisco Matos, Hector Felix (PRD), Manuel Diaz and Alfredo Martinez (PLD) maintained this position. As reported, Jimenez called for killing the criminals. During a visit by the chief of the Police to the Chamber of Deputies, the Police chief received a plaque of recognition. Deputy Hector Felix said he was angry that engineer Francina Hungria’s attackers, who blinded her during the incident, were not killed off. Polanco Gomez was at the Chamber of Deputies when he was asked for details on recent violent crimes.
As reported in Diario Libre, upon hearing the requests for extra-judicial action by the Police, the chief of the Police “showed moderation when the legislators made suggestions on police methods for fighting crime.”
Polanco said that the bad application of the Criminal Procedures Code enables criminals to return to the streets to commit more crimes. Polanco said that a recent example is that the justice system released on bail one of engineer Hungria’s accused attackers, who had murdered a citizen in 2010.
Polanco argued that Dominican Republic continues to be one of the safest countries in Latin America. He announced the Police would install 600 surveillance cameras and purchase patrol vehicles to boost security.
Deputy Police chief General Victor Campusano Jimenez and Metropolitan Transport Authority (Amet) director General Juan Geronimo Brown Perez were also present at the meeting.
