Chavez cancer recurrence a worry for DR

The state of health of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who is now in Cuba to undergo a fourth cancer operation, has led to uncertainty in the Dominican Republic over the future of the Petrocaribe Agreement. The government receives 50,000 barrels of oil a day, which is financed through payment in black beans and other national products. The DR owes Venezuela, as of this year, US$2 billion under Petrocaribe, an agreement signed in 2006 and which has a 20-year duration. During the last election campaign in Venezuela, opposition candidate Henrique Capriles warned that if he won he would review the agreement.
