Air Europa to fill Iberia gap

Spanish airline Air Europa, part of the Globalia group, has agreed to a request from the Dominican government to cover the routes that will be vacated when Iberia pulls out of the country on April 1 2013.

As reported in Listin Diario, the agreement was reached during a telephone call from President Danilo Medina to the president of Globalia, Juan Jose Hidalgo. Medina asked the Spanish businessman to guarantee connections from the Dominican Republic to Madrid, and the continued arrival of Spanish tourists to the country.

At the moment, Air Europa has a daily flight to the Dominican Republic, but as of April it will fly to Santo Domingo’s Las Americas International Airport 14 times a week, in the early afternoon and in the evenings. There will also be flights from Punta Cana to Madrid seven times a week as well as to Puerto Plata during high season.

Hidalgo said that they were committed to helping with the development of tourism in the country and wanted to play their part in achieving its success.
