Christmas baskets to be handed out next week

The Director of the Presidential Social Plan, Cesar Prieto, has announced that the government will begin distributing Christmas baskets to poor people throughout the country on Thursday 20 December.

He said that the local authorities will be handing out 800,000 baskets at a total cost of RD$1 billion and that President Danilo Medina will not be involved.

The baskets will contain rice, pigeon peas, spaghetti, punch, wine and rum as well as other items.

Prieto said that the government has bought 60,000 bottles of wine from the Neyba wine producers, who complained that the government didn’t buy from them, but there was not enough money in the coffers to buy more.
