First aid centers planned

The Deputy Minister of Public Heath Networks, Dr. Nelson Rodriguez Monegro has announced that they will be setting up first aid units in the country’s larger hospitals at a cost of RD$1.7 billion in 2013.

He said that this would help ease the pressure on the Dario Contreras, Luis Eduardo Aybar and Francisco Moscoso Puello hospitals in the Santo Domingo area, the Juan Pablo Pina hospital in San Cristobal, the Jose Maria Cabral and Baez hospital in Santiago, and other major hospitals that handle a large volume of patients.

He went on to say that many of the large hospitals are not doing a good enough job at the primary care stage to prevent the current levels of overcrowding. He said they are full of people who could be seen in a first aid center, but they are mixed up with emergency cases.

Referring to the problem of violence at the Dario Contreras hospital, Rodriguez Monegro said that Public Health Ministry officials would meet with the Minister of the Police, Jose Armando Polanco Gomez, and the Minister of the Armed Forces, Sigfrido Pared Perez to discuss the idea of recruiting police and military personnel to provide security in the main hospitals around the country where violence is a problem.
