President and First Lady start project for disabled children

President Danilo Medina and First Lady Candida Montilla attended a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday 11 December marking the start of construction work on a new Integrated Care Center for the Disabled (Said) on Luperon Avenue at the corner with Enriquillo Avenue in Santo Domingo.

The project will be built by the First Lady’s office, with co-funding from the government of Taiwan at a cost of US$2 million.

The center will have five outlets, two in Santo Domingo, one in Santiago, one in Azua and the final one in the eastern region.

Montilla said that in the first three years they expect to treat at least 328,440 children under the age of ten with Down syndrome, autism, paralysis and physical disabilities.
