Lack of volume hinders farm trade

Shippers say that they need more volume, since they have the ships. They add that the main challenge for Dominican farmers and businesspeople is to create the volumes needed for achieving cost reductions and compete more efficiently on the international market. Anibal Pina, the executive vice-president of the Dominican Republic Shippers Association, said that if the volumes were sufficient the shipping sector could supply the vessels and the routes. Pina was speaking during a Seminar on Business Opportunities hosted by the Embassy of the United Kingdom and the Farm and Forestry Development Center (CEDAF). The shipping representative said that the UK was well served with bananas from the port of Manzanillo, and there are several options from the ports of Haina and Caucedo, but the volumes are not sufficient.
