Doctors and other staff members at the Dr. Salvador B. Gautier hospital demonstrated, burned tires and called on President Danilo Medina to fire the Director of the Dominican Social Security Institute (IDSS), Sabino Baez, as they have not been paid their additional Christmas salary.
The demonstration, which took place yesterday, Monday 17 December, started at the hospital and the protestors then made their way to the Social Security building where the director of the IDSS was looking down at them from a second floor window.
A delegation of doctors headed by Dominican Medical Association (CMD) president Amarilis Herrera, and which also included Bolivar Santana, Fulgencio Severino and Deisy Sosa met with Dr. Sabino Baez. They were told that the IDSS was expecting to start to pay their Christmas bonuses today.
However the demonstrators did not believe them and said they would continue to fight until they were paid, stating that around 8,500 staff members had still not been paid their Christmas bonus.
