In what appears to be a blind alley with no way out except a new permanent split, the political climate in the main opposition PRD party continued to convulse yesterday, Tuesday 18 December when former President Hipolito Mejia said that he would not respond to the summons made by the party’s prosecutor, Geovanny Tejada, to attend a disciplinary trial. Mejia said that the solution to the current crisis in the party was to hold an ordinary Convention. For this purpose, the faction that he heads will analyze the correlation of forces in the membership of the Political Commission today, Wednesday 19 December.
In the meantime, PRD president Miguel Vargas made it clear that the summons issued to Mejia is an issue for the Control Commission and of the National Disciplinary Council, a process under way led by organs and leaders that are doing their work. “When it is up to me to do it, I will reveal my position on this matter,” while warning that the disciplinary process, institutionalism necessary to convert the party into a winning political group, cannot take a step back, since the “the current administration is determined that chaos, disorder and lack of respect in the party will be overcome.”
Former vice-presidential candidate Luis Abinader said that the conflict creates “noise and a distraction” which favors former President Leonel Fernandez and the former officials of his administration who are being accused of acts of corruption.
