The army leaves La Romana

The Governor of La Romana province, Juan Jose Santana, has revealed that there are no longer any members of the army in the city as they have all been transferred to San Pedro de Macoris.

Santana said that Colonel Victor Mercedes who was in charge of the brigade in San Pedro de Macoris called him to say that he had decided that all army personnel in La Romana who worked at the government buildings and other institutions should henceforth report to San Pedro. The situation appears to have arisen since the Santa Rosa de Lima fortress was handed over to the Culture Ministry.

Santana said that he was concerned that La Romana could no longer count on the support of the Army, which had been there since 1910 running the jail, and instead the National Police were in charge of ensuring order was maintained. He said that he was investigating the possibility that a small battalion could be stationed at the Sports Complex.
